About

Hasan Ahmad, DO, MBA, MSc, FACP, is Vice President and Associate Chief Medical Information Officer at Parkview Health, a 16-hospital integrated health system serving Indiana and Ohio with approximately 1,800 providers. He provides physician leadership and oversight for Parkview’s Epic electronic health record, clinical decision support, documentation tools, and clinical AI strategy, and he continues to practice hospital medicine. Dr. Ahmad founded and chairs the Epic Inpatient Provider Council, the system’s first physician-led inpatient informatics council, and its Enterprise CDS Committee, where physician-led governance has reduced interruptive alerts by 25%, or 100,000 fewer firings each month. He has led enterprise adoption of ambient AI documentation and Epic’s AI tools, as well as implementation of the Epic Sepsis V2 model. Board certified in clinical informatics and internal medicine, he completed an ACGME clinical informatics fellowship and an MS at the University of Washington and a Physician Executive MBA at the University of Tennessee. He speaks nationally on clinical AI and decision support, and his research has appeared in JAMIA.

How I lead

  1. Govern before go-live

Every AI and CDS tool gets clinical validation, a named owner, and a clear rule for when to stop it.

  2. Retire as deliberately as you launch

Turning things off is stewardship. That approach is how 100,000 alert firings a month were removed.

  3. Measure what clinicians feel, then what finance needs

Clinical value and financial value aren’t separate stories, so measure both: how clinicians feel in the first weeks, then documentation accuracy, revenue integrity, and financial outcomes over the first year.

  4. One roadmap, one table

Clinical, IT, data, and operations leaders make the calls together instead of running disconnected pilots.

Change management & adoption

  • Peer-led adoption, not tip sheets

Drove ambient AI adoption through specialty coaching and peer governance instead of handout-only rollouts, reaching 60% ambulatory encounter-level utilization.

  • Physician-led governance

Founded and chairs the Epic Inpatient Provider Council, Parkview’s first physician-led inpatient informatics council, and the Enterprise CDS Committee, and chairs the Results Routing Committee and Secure Chat workgroup, so clinicians help decide what gets built and what gets turned off.

  • Resistance as feedback

Serves as a visible physician advocate for clinicians in technology initiatives, treating pushback as usability data to act on rather than a training gap.

  • Feedback built into the workflow

Designed REDCap feedback links inside inpatient, outpatient, and ED order sets, averaging about 1 minute 19 seconds per submission. The method was later replicated at Parkview and presented at Epic XGM.

  • Go-live readiness

Led physician change management and go-live readiness for Epic’s rule-based and AI CDI nudges, tuning them until agreement rose from 48% to 57%.

  • Earning physician time

Projects must give clinicians time back, like the 300+ provider hours returned each year by removing a single hard stop.
